Marriage records in Brazil are held by the civil registry office where the marriage was registered. For immigration matters, the annotations in the margin of the registry entry frequently matter as much as the certificate itself.

Annotations matter
A later divorce is recorded as an annotation on the original marriage entry. A standard certificate may not show it; the full-content version does. If prior marital status is relevant to your matter, request the full-content version.
Marriages registered abroad
Marriages involving Brazilian nationals that took place outside Brazil are sometimes transcribed into a Brazilian registry afterward. Whether such a transcription exists depends on the parties having filed it. Tell us what you know and we will confirm what is available before work begins.
