Brazilian Police Clearance Certificates

Brazil issues police clearance certificates at two levels — federal (Polícia Federal) and state (Polícia Civil of the relevant state). Which one a U.S. matter requires depends on the receiving authority's instructions.

What this request covers

  • Federal police clearance certificate (certidão de antecedentes criminais — Polícia Federal)
  • State-level police clearance certificate from the relevant state police authority
  • Coordination of local procedures where in-person steps or Brazilian identification are involved
  • Apostille coordination when the receiving authority requires it
  • Certified-translation coordination when required by your matter

What we need from your firm

  • Client initials
  • Brazilian state where the client resided
  • Whether the matter requires the federal certificate, a state certificate, or both
  • Whether apostille and certified translation are needed
  • Any deadline your matter is working against

Federal or state

The U.S. Department of State Reciprocity Schedule for Brazil describes which police document is expected for consular purposes. We retrieve the document described there; interpretation of how it applies to a specific filing remains with U.S. counsel.

Validity periods

Brazilian police certificates carry a limited validity period from the date of issue. If your matter has a filing window, tell us and we will time retrieval accordingly rather than issuing a certificate that expires before it is used.
